Unity and such has a ton of free assets that you can use either for your finished product or for placeholders til you manage to make the assets yourself for your game, if they don't quite fit the vib your going for see if the license let's you edit them! opengameart and itch.io are also great
Just want to add that there's a bitsy inspired engine called binksi that is very similar but incorporates ink. And also let's you use a few more colours to work with! smwhr.itch.io/binksi
In my case, I started picking up Gamemaker Studio again after playing around with Tyranobuilder and finding some things I wanted to do being a bit too advanced for the program. Past couple years I've gone from not being able to code at all to having written up an entire dialogue system from scratch!
It's early days yet, but I'm real interested in what's going to come out of narrat.dev
Yes! Thanks for putting this together. I'll add it to the readings for the game design class. (Also, sneaky little @netrunner.nullsignal.games logo in the hair.)
Iโm on/off working on my first game right now, and lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/ is my number one help. I would also recommend that you google exact what youโre looking to do + โlemmasoftโ or + โrenpy Redditโ. The community is friendlier than youโd think, just simply straight forward.
I think just like OP says, the best thing to start with is small. Character enters a room, has a conversation. If you feel defeated, remember a strong story comes first when it comes to a visual *novel*. Look into old classics, stalk around steam and the Reddit. Youโll be encouraged by your peers :)
Sorry for the spam in advance Adding more: Visual novel maker www.visualnovelmaker.com While limited it is capable of doing quite a lot. (payed)
Narrat I have no personal experience with this (free) narrat.dev
Game maker (free) Surprisingly complex and if you want to you can also code too gamemaker.io
GDevelop (subscription with free version) Again a bit limited so you have to get creative on how you do the things you want to do. I think they added ai features but didn't check gdevelop.io/es-es
RPG Developer Bakin - 3D RPG maker with a lot of potential thanks to its community and the Steam Workshop. Ingenoire (former PSO2-tuber) has made a few mods that make porting Vroid models into the engine extremely easy. ingenoire.itch.io Smile Game Builder is the cheaper/more restrictive version.
๐ As someone who made a visual novel once - which already has very little coding, it's crazy how little anyone wants to help u. They'll rather mock u, & tell you to learn coding first. Like why can't we game dev-beginner's have some kind of training wheels? We'll learn in time but not without help
Another simple option for visual novels and RPG stuff in the vein of a Disco Elysium but smaller scale is Narrat. Not sure how it compares to Renpy but it's also free and possibly easier to use? Definitely more underground๐ narrat.dev
I'd like to suggest looking at enginesdatabase.com where you can look at and filter through a lot of different game engines by various features (2D/3D, Visual Scripting vs Coding, etc) and genres (Platformers, RPGs, etc) to find an engine that may work best for your game idea and skill level.
