Tbf Britain has marched a lot toward the right since the 1980s too. Between 1950 and 1980, Conservative PMs like Harold Macmillan were huge champions of public ownership and the welfare state, such that those still living fiercely criticised Thatcher's privatisation.

My parents left with me in the mid-80s. Thatcher was no saint, imo. I don’t believe that privatization works, because of the UK. It was really horrible to watch people there succumb to thinking there is only one way. We were never a welfare state, in America. We plugged the gaps of capitalism.

I agree wholeheartedly. Thatcher was a ghoul, a soulless money-driven vulture seeking to eviscerate the arms of public good and sell their hollowed-out corpses to her friends. It was Macmillan himself, a fellow Conservative, who criticised the policy as "selling the family silver".
