Just posted the first in a monthly series of design diaries for the game that I’m self-publishing next year! This one’s about the ideation and some very early prototypes. I think it’s fun to show off how different the first version was, but how it still shares some of the final version’s essence.

$ ctftcg --watch ul27 INFO [ctf] Connecting to job ul27 INFO [ctf] Design Diary 1: ctftcg.com/posts/2026-1... DEBUG [ctf] Design Diary 1 covers how the core game loop of CTF came to be, including an early prototype that looked and played very differently and the lessons learned from that

Next month I’m planning on covering card design, prototyping, and playtesting. December and January are just sketches for now, but I’m planning to talk about printing last year’s batch for the market (lots of mistakes to talk about there!) and how CTF’s design had to change for a bigger release.

In the background, I’ve completely rewritten the software I use to manage the card database and render the cards (that’s probably worth a post of its own next year!), and I’m hoping to order a test print within the next week or two.
