continuing (lol) the credit feeding discussions in replies this morning waking up, refining my thoughts a bit more i think one thing i value and enjoy about arcade games in my journey is that you can experience them holistically. i am always playing, and improving at, the entire game.

Credit feeding is fine Like how else were you supposed to actually practice hard parts of games you were going for the 1cc on back in the day before save states I can only assume the people talking shit on credit feeding have never seriously trained for a proper 1cc

some people like challenging themselves on one credit, some people like intensely practising save states or practice modes, some people like playing full runs and seeing how much better they do over time. i think we all can do a mix of all three but i definitely have a tendency to the latter

Yeah, I've never been very into arcade or at all into speedrunning because I'm very sloppy, but there's two games that clicked for me (Metal Slug 3 and Castlevana HoD Boss Rush) and perfecting those was an absolute blast of a time. I cannot imagine being an "arcade fan" and not liking trying to 1cc.

speedrunning was likely invented as a way of enforcing an arcade like structure onto console games so its not shocking that ud notice a parallel

modern shmups will do a great job of accommodating all those styles. like ZeroRanger, you work to unlock more 'credits' the longer/better you play. you can skip to each level for practice... but full 1CC is still the ultimate prize. same rules of progression can apply to any arcade game really.

yeah i'm being mean to that one guy because he's acting like a weird dick but it's a "you do you" thing. the nature of the beast is that how you engage with these is personal just bristle at the idea that people who credit feed aren't trying to improve because. many do that to try and shoot for 1cc

most people i know who credit feed arcade games are trying to eventually get to the point of 1cc and track "how many does it take me to beat the game" as their progress, not everyone's a fuckin barcade guy

and i'm not really dogmatic about any of this, just speaking to my experience as to what i've enjoyed getting into shmups. i dont think its bad if a game doesn't work like this though its definitely making it harder for me to learn cho ren sha lol. but i think these are all open design questions

Im going to be so fr credit feeding discourse is silly this is a Solved Issue there is already a state between “encouraging skill” and “allowing failure” and it’s called every continue system after the arcade era. You get some retries for grace and if you do really well you get bonus content

1CC vs. credit feeding is a proxy for inane difficulty discourse where we must force normies to play on Lunatic or else Farmville wins, this will save the gaming industry and bring back the magic of Art

I mean I won't doubt that some are saying that but most of what I'm seeing is simply stressing that 1CCs create fulfilling learning experiences that show off new sides of the game, it's comparable to things like rank-chasing in games like DMC or Ultrakill
