i don't believe cowardice is the only reason for amnesty international's decision and that framing is doing JK Rowling's PR for her as this unstoppable legal machine which - when cases are actually challenged in court - is not always true. i think AI leadership is sympathetic to GC orgs and causes

AI UK made the initial report but the retractions and disavowal came from the International Secretariat, which framed AI UK's report as being a rogue action they did not approve. perhaps this was purely cowardly, pragmatic survival instinct but they've stood up to far more powerful opponents before

it seems far more likely and logical to me that, at the bare minimum, influential figures within the International Secretariat simply agree with JK Rowling and her cause

on one hand i agree that this is essentially weaponised cowardice, on the other, I think the fecklessness angle is more harmful to the org

tons of human rights NGOs have conspicuously bigoted leadership and there's the implication that everyone else is 'safe' and can count on them. on the other hand a feckless human rights org is useless for everyone

Surely the whole premise of Amnesty International requires it to stand up to powerful opponents? If "someone with more money might sue us" turned them into a bowl of pudding automatically, it would just be all pudding. They *chose* this collapse.
