hilariously this is maybe the one genuinely selfless thing kaiba does in the entire manga. battle city kaiba would never let a little thing like his brother get in the way of a fair fight with the pharaoh

one thing that seperates yu-gi-oh from other shonen sports manga is its genuine belief that games are Not Important. so kaiba blatantly cheating isn't framed as a weakness it's a moral victory where he realised there are more important things than winning card games. he would not realise this again

The Pharaoh's ability is fundamentally cheating and the story says "this is cool and good" and it's correct (Pegasus's ability is also cheating and framed as bad but thats what you get when you turn people into trading cards)

i love that yugi doesnt want to be the best duelist. he wants to be a game designer and try lots of different games with lots of different people. just utterly uninterested in the Battle of it. this is why kaiba hates dueling him even though he's just as good if not better than the pharoah at cards

yu gi oh is like really fuckin good bro takahashi one of the goats. the combo of konami's evil card game machine in the background and its memetic status in the west kinda obscures that it's the real deal. one of the genuine great post dragon ball battle manga

dipped my toe into some of the other cynical product advertising anime (buddyfight, vanguard, etc) expecting they'd at least be a copy. it's so interesting how YGO would still be better if the only thing it did was have actual characters

he was one of the best at combining aesthetics he enjoyed. the part in the manga where he just creates his own spawn to gush about it is so charming. pegasus is another one I think about a lot.

I legitimately read your first post and was like "why the fuck would kiaba do some weird cheating stuff in a duel. Not my seto kaiba!" Because I forgot that in season 1 he was trying to save Mokuba instead of just doing life and death duels because he loves dueling.
