In university I was helping my professor write an article on which nations are represented as the enemy in war games. My job was to basically get the title, the nation, and the game’s sales in a spreadsheet. It broke his heart for me to tell him that sales figures are basically just 🤷‍♂️

It’s not surprising if it’s on the lower side. It’s full of shot-reverse shot scenes with MMO style sidequests and was built on in-house tech. The big setpieces and building the combat systems, animations etc. probably cost the most. CBU3 is known for running a tight ship in XIV too

Video games defy conventional accounting, it's hard to separate (1) project from the technological whole. Even with perfect information and honest intentions (which accounting and consulting firms often don't have), simple methodological changes could give dramatically different results.

I'm becoming more and more convinced the games industry has figured out their own form of Hollywood accounting, none of the numbers seem right, in any direction. See also Spider-Man 2 costing like 4 times as much as Spider-Man 1
