Democracy is the realization of "the inalienable dignity of humankind," the ultimate sine qua non. In 1938, seeing the coming world war, the Nobel laureate Thomas Mann wrote these words in a pamphlet addressed to the America, its people and its government, "The Coming Victory of Democracy." 1/17

Mann wrote, "I wish to give the word 'democracy' a very broad meaning ... for I am connecting it with the highest human attributes, with the idea and the absolute; I am relating it to the inalienable dignity of mankind, which no force, however humiliating, can destroy." 2/17

Mann had undergone a transformation. In 1927 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, based upon his novel Buddenbrooks, which he published in 1901 at age 26. He was not always a champion of democracy. Indeed, he published in 1916 during WWI "Reflections of an Unpolitical Man." 3/17

"Reflections" was antidemocratic, favoring an authoritarian government based on German culture, which Mann saw as superior. However, when he saw fascist groups, including Hitler's Nazis, quoting his work to promote their movement, Mann changed his ideas completely. 4/17
