They're saying press who want to leave the kettle have to go a distance away. This conveniently means no one will have close up footage of whatever they do to the protestors.

Kettling is not a proper crowd control method.  It shows malicious intent. If they need to clear access they should simply use a U formation to drive protestors back and then hold clearance. There is no reason to arrest large numbers of protestors.

Blocking access may be illegal and protestors can be arrested (civil disobedience means being willing to be arrested for your cause), but it doesn't make this technique ideal. Arresting large numbers of protesters is not an effective means of clearing them and only escalates the situation.
