In 2005 I went to a sleep disorder specialist in Manhattan to talk about my sleep paralysis. He told me I needed to see a psychiatrist because I clearly had schizophrenia, his evidence being he’d never heard of sleep paralysis and I was 25 and didn’t have a husband or boyfriend.

A question from Reddit that I'll answer here: "What's the most unhinged thing a doctor has said to you with a straight face?"

In 2018, I was in labor to deliver a stillborn son, and my epidural stopped working. Nurses called anesthesiologist repeatedly, who refused to check if the epidural had fallen out bc, “I’m known for having magic hands…” bsky.app/profile/roll...

“I’ve only had one epidural fall out in my entire career, and she was morbidly obese!” So now I’m at the peak of labor in immense pain. Nurses call him a third time. And he says, “Well, all pain is personal.” As in, I am imagining painful contractions because my baby is dead.

At which point I start doing scissor kicks — which you cannot do if you have a working epidural! — and say, “What about this, doctor? Is this personal, too?! Am I imagining this?!”

He re-does the epidural (there was no one else). I have massive contractions coursing through me, but I can’t breathe! Bc if I move and the doc I don’t trust slips, I could be paralyzed forever. My spouse is crouched down holding my hands, and I say, “There will never be a worse moment than this.”

This anesthesiologist later sent his bill to the wrong address, even though I got every other L&D bill at the correct address. I didn’t get it until it went to collections, which had no problem finding me! After paying it, I spent the rest of the day leaving reviews on every MD website on earth.

I realize I started the day sharing a different painful experience and am now sharing this one. So let me just say, I am happy. I am healthy. I am loved. I am incredibly lucky in so many ways, and I know it. I share this bc I think it happens to a lot of women and I want them to feel less alone. 🙏
