Just after midnight, a pair of American Airlines flights with the same call sign were on the same frequency near Phoenix. Call sign confusion has resulted in previous incidents, but thankfully ATC and the pilots were able to resolve the situation. flightradar24.com/blog/aviatio...

I’m wondering why the atco didn’t resolve the conflict sooner and more efficient by giving the departure a heading (either to NW or NE), allowing it to resume its climb to cruise alt earlier, saving fuel. It would also be even safer. Is other tfc not shown? That might explain the chosen solution.

It seems either the departure flight left early, or the arrival flight is arriving late, I'm assuming this because they are both assigned the same call sign. So, one flight lands, then the other goes back up with the same call sign. What s strange coincidence though.

Basically yes. American Airlines in particular will frequently use the same flight number for outbound/inbound flight pairs. AA2482 leaves ORD at 9p to land in PHX around 10:45p, then leaves PHX at 11:45p to land back at ORD around 5:30a. But yesterday's ORD-PHX flight ran late.
