East of Eden is terrific and everyone is rightly talking about Florence Pugh's performance as Cathy.. But I am spellbound by Hoon Lee's turn as Lee. I can't think of a better written example of forced code-switching and racialised emotional labour in a mainstream TV show.

The scene where Lee has to explain why he "talk Chinese talk" is so rich and deep and full of truth that I could swim in it for days. It's worth watching the series just for that scene. But there's a lot more to the character. And the story as a whole.
