I'd have a bit more time for this MattyY take if I wasn't 99% sure that had the result gone the other way he be all over Twitter smugly claiming there are important lessons for leftists to learn from Lula's failure (be more conservative, do not fight for anything ever).

I think this is broadly correct but it’s a symptom not a cause- the reason I’m deeply invested in the democratic choices of e.g. Brazil is that there’s a really big difference between Lula and Bolsonaro! a characteristic of democracy is that it allows for very frequent big direction changes

I’ve no time for it at all. It’s the political philosophy equivalent of America first nationalism - shortsighted and ignorant, assuming that if you just look after yourself then issues from elsewhere can’t impact you. Kind of thing I’d expect from a toddler.

Given how interconnected the world is, with bad actors working together in many countries, I think his take his bullshit deflection posted instead of the constipated mental rage he’s presuming attempting to process.

Also his takes about the UK are reliably shit so maybe he should either stop having them or get a bit more invested in the countries he's having takes about.

Yep, basically had the same thought. bsky.app/profile/adsq...

Also we probably wouldn't care as much if it wasn't for all populist right victories in the last decade being held up as an inevitable sweeping global trend. With *some* justification - whether they are perceived as popular then impacts success of similar parties in other countries.

I think Corbyn and Gaza is a good example of this as it ended up with him joining up with some extremely socially conservative MPs in a domestic uk party.
