People who are generally upset with how their lives are going, and also feel there are too many people around who look different, can never actually be appeased. Not by Brexit, not by eliminating FoM, not by new taxes or fees, not by ending ILR, not by denaturalizing not by anything.

He's exploiting a gap which Labour should be filling because Starmer's hypnotised himself (or hired McSweeney to do it). I have deep scepticism about ZP's platform, given his political journey I can recognise an unserious chancer when I see one.

I think that's a little pessimistic. They could probably be appeased by the public execution of 50,000 brown people and the deportation of a couple of million more.

They can be appeased if the government actually makes their lives better. A government that tries a "lite" version of an attack on people who look different certainly won't appease them.

Absolutely this, patronising/heartless/arrogant/[insert inaccurate metropolitan elite-type smear of your choice] as it might wrongly appear. As I implied yesterday in a longer exchange, the act of voting itself is the hit, and like all drugs, it doesn't satiate, and Labour can't match Reform's hit.

I think the point (if I’m right in this unprovable analysis!) is that some of these voters don’t care about the consequences. Their motivation is how casting that vote makes them feel.

I think a gentler way to describe it is that voters aren't choosing from a menu of policy options, but selecting from among representatives they feel best align with their values, priorities and fears. You can't policy-tinker your way to a brand.

That’s so spot on, mate. Yet we’re doomed to focus group vomited ‘brand building.’ The curse of the politicians believing communications is superior to competency or reason. ‘I’m shit at my job but can talk a good game’ is going to be the death of all of us.

However one phrases it, this is the fundamental truth American Democrats – both moderate and progressive – have tended to fail to grok for decades. Their knee-jerk solution to every concern is a 25 page policy platform. Regardless of one's opinion of whether the proposals will actually help...

...(worth remembering here that protectionism was a staple of lefty and pro-union Dems in the pre-MAGA era) it's basically been a story of Missing the Point. The two Dems who most Got It – Clinton and Obama – are the two most popular Presidents since the end of the Cold War...

Yes, I think that's fair. And don't get me wrong: how my vote makes me feel because of who I'm voting for and the party they're in is a factor that influences my vote too. It's just that it's secondary and a sort of positive side-effect that I look forward to. Consequences and policies matter.

Problem is that there are a lot of wealthy middle aged people without seemingly a problem in the world who would happily bomb the boats. How does that fit? Is it just easier to say a lot (~30%) of people are racists? They’ve just crept out from under the rock they were driven under in the 80s.

I think to be (perhaps overly generous) you can say: a) People tend to peg their perceived financial status against their peers, not some objective standard. So middle-class people often FEEL precarious when they're fine. b) Those who are comfortable are easy to scare.

What motivates such people and gives them a reason to live is to always attack someone on made up pretexts. If they magically find themselves in a country, which is populated only with people like them, they will lose their reason to live and become even more miserable than they are now.

These are not intelligent people. But they can be made to blame those who are really responsible for their problems instead of at those who aren’t. We just need to stop treating them with respect and manipulate them in the same way they’re currently manipulated by the right wing.

Exactly. Unable to take responsibility for their own lives and persist in looking outside themselves for someone or something to blame. Everything that is wrong in their lives is someone else's fault.
