the plot beats of his rise is something straight out of a bbc comedy series, esp his academic station. to act like there was never going to be any schadenfreude (he was at cambridge!!!) or coverage is absurd. but the constant, repeated, intensity of coverage—see also claudine gay—was just racism

the editor of the telegraph especially— should, frankly, blow his brains out. this was a lynching of a man who didn't deserve death or anything close to it. they knew exactly what they were doing unlike a low rent fraud who just backs themselves into a pile of white lies

it's... a nearly impossible thing to put into the public domain that doesn't simultaneously assure the public there's not a murderer on the loose and be perfectly sensitive to the family as they mourn. I'm no fan of police press talk but this probably the best they can do

I presume that in the UK, as in most countries, it is the coroner that has the final say in whether it is a suicide, so police probably aren't even allowed to say as much, even if it is very apparent at the scene.

Yeah, with the effective "code" for obvious suicide being as above. The only alternative would be sudden and unexpected natural causes but I'd find that unlikely.

"The only alternative..." An accidental drug-overdose would - for a generalised 40 year old male - statistically be roughly as likely as suicide. For an extreme endurance-athlete, the risk of heart-disease is heightened. I don't think we are ready to conclude anything.

As I say, I've been made quite unwillingly familiar with the terms used by British police when talking about suicide. He killed himself.
