Experts said it was vital for schools to incorporate cybersecurity into their AI curricula. They pointed to what happened with software as compsci programs neglected security. "Everybody’s chasing the cool, sexy thing of AI" without always doing "due diligence," one said.

I couldn't find nationwide data on AI security programs in higher education, but I found several undergraduate courses and spoke to professors and administrators at several universities with programs. They said they wanted students to understand and evaluate risks and ethics.

The federal government has been tiptoeing into this space too. The Trump administration rebranded a cyber scholarship program to have an AI security focus, and the NSA recently added AI security to the areas in which it certifies leading schools.

The Pentagon also funds a National Cybersecurity Workforce Development Program, through which three universities lead coalitions of schools in creating AI security lesson plans and training pathways together. My story has what I think is the first public map of NCWDP schools.

Between the anecdotes I heard from academic leaders and recently published online learning data, demand for AI security education seems to be growing. There's no time to waste, experts said, in preparing future AI developers and managers to understand technical and ethical risks.
