🧵 I have a few problems with the "Valuing the hard hat as well as the graduation cap" narrative. There are social conditions being ignored - like gender. I've got a PhD in gender studies and for 3+ years I worked in a building merchant. When helping customers I was regularly told "I need a man." šŸ‘‡šŸ»

In my own experience of working in a building merchant, customers presumed I was not strong enough or I didn't have sufficient knowledge solely based upon the fact I am a woman. Sexism impacts how women feel out of place in these environments - it's not a coincidence the trades are dominated by men.

If there is going to be a drive towards trade apprenticeships by the government the male dominated culture of construction - that encourages male bonding through misogyny and homophobia - also needs to be addressed; as young women and LGBTQA+ people will self exclude because of gender socialisation.
