Biiiig scoop on privatization of public nursing staff through pointless middlemen, staffing agencies. 1/

Jeremy Appel 🍉@readtheorchard.org

SCOOP: Covenant Care is paying almost $110 an hour for registered nurses through private staffing agencies, more than double the wages of its most experienced unionized nurses. But Covenant says it doesn't know how much the agency nurses actually make. www.theprogressreport.ca/covenant_age...

I have to hand it to Doug and Danielle. This is really a clever way to be able to "truthfully" say you're spending *more* on health care, and yet still be starving healthcare of the resources required to meet the province's needs.

what’s particularly perverse is that most other jurisdictions in canada were doing this too. so nobody’s really getting more nurses, they’re all just paying a premium to hire the neighbors’ nurses

Appel's Alberta reporting is now particularly important given this new precedent in Toronto over agency nursing outsourcing by Unity Health: bsky.app/profile/pica...

Toronto hospitals have been outsourcing more and more #nursing jobs to agencies. A new ruling against Unity Health could change that, by Kenyon Wallace www.thestar.com/business/tor... via @torontostar.bsky.social

AHS has a locum nurse program. They could chose to hire local nurses, and expand it across Alberta, instead of just the north. They'd cut out the middle men agencies, and save millions. But the purpose of UCP is to destroy public healthcare & siphon $ to private interests.

This isn't the only way the public pays more. Guess who interviews these nurses? Any desk person at the agency, who only asks 4 nursing license. Not all of them require references. The system ends with "patch"care by mediocre nurses, who move on the minute they might get into trouble 4 poor care
