I played the @austinkleon.bsky.social blackout game with Ian's post. WordPress among so many other things out there still uses PHP and the job security it provides, much like COBOL, should be protected at all costs. frfr tho be safe out there friends and patch your shit, thoughtfully and fast.

shitposts aside, this one is serious, my loves: if you’re just waking up and you have any service online running PHP 5.4 to latest, you need to take it down RIGHT NOW and don’t put it back online until after it’s patched absolutely catastrophic vulnerability dropped in the middle of the night

As someone who doesn't know much about web development other than like HTML, but willing to learn, what would be alternative languages that do the same thing as PHP? Is it kind of like Javascript?

Seriously great question! What's an example of would you like to build and how in the weeds do you want to get technically vs putting focus on other things like design, marketing, etc?

If you already know to use Leaflet, it sounds like you're pretty experienced already. So is the question more about server-side / backend?

Yeah, I can do stuff in an IDE and check it out, but I have no clue how to actually get that stuff onto a website, and probably would need to figure out how to connect PostGIS as well

Quite a rabbithole. It depends on what your priorities are. If I am prioritizing self-sovereignty, I often lean on static sites and Hugo does a lot to help with that (there are many other choices which are fine). If I am prioritizing liveness and/or p2p, I've been using Cloudflare Pages & Workers

worker cold starts are basically a non issue now so 'liveness' isn't much of a tradeoff anymore. what actually bites is state, D1/KV eventual consistency across regions can surprise you if you're used to one postgres box.
