can always tell when a "native" app is built with react native. none of the animations are smooth and they literally never respect the OS accessibility + motion settings. not sure why people use this stuff.

I can only speak for Android, as I haven't used an iOS device since the iPhone 4. Scrolling on iOS is generally bad. Laggy, and with a capped framerate. The 60hz touch sample rate (30 in Safari) doesn't help, nor do the 60hz screens on most models.

I’ve been thinking about this some. Do you think the problem is: 1. The web is too limited in what it can effectively animate 2. The tools make it too easy to animate non-composite-able properties 3. Powerful tools in the hands of unskilled labor 4. Something else?

Absolutely not. It's one of the worst apps I've ever used on Android. You can't even open the app from a notification without it locking up on the splash screen. You can't copy images. The toolbar disappears. Text input flickers. Scrolling is janky af. The web app is actually a lot better

The same reason why companies hire "full stack developers" – to save money. That said, I think Bluesky is fine and Voyager for Lemmy is also pretty close to what Apollo was.
