🧵 Do Americans know what they’re getting with Trump’s crusade to require proof of citizenship to vote? It’s not as simple as showing a photo ID. Here’s what you need to know👇

(2/9) Republicans keep peddling the claim that proving citizenship at the polls is not a big deal. But there are only two documents that do so for someone born in the United States: an unexpired passport or an original or certified copy of a birth certificate.

democracydocket.comVoter ID tends to poll well. But that doesn’t mean voters really want itBy focusing on this issue ahead of the midterm elections, Trump and the GOP might be helping Democrats.

(3/9) Driver’s licenses – even REAL IDs – do not prove citizenship. Only five states — Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington — issue Enhanced Driver's Licenses that are restricted to U.S. citizens.

(4/9) Only about half of Americans even have a passport. And Black Americans have much lower rates of holding passports than White Americans. This is not a coincidence. This is a way for Trump to disadvantage one of the most loyal groups of Democratic voters.

(5/9) Not everyone in the U.S. has a birth certificate, either. Older voters are less likely to have been born in a hospital, where they would have received an official birth certificate. And older Black voters who were born in the Jim Crow South were oftentimes excluded from hospitals.

(6/9) Even for those who do have a birth certificate, it may not be enough. The majority of women in heterosexual marriages have changed their last name. This means the name on their birth certificate won’t match their current name, and that document can’t be used to prove citizenship.

(7/9) Once again, this is not a coincidence. It is another way for Trump and the Republican Party to disadvantage a group of voters who are more likely to vote for Democrats.

(8/9) Trump and Republicans’ goal is not just to keep non-citizens from voting. It’s to keep Democrats, lawful U.S. citizens and eligible voters from casting a ballot. The fact that it’s confusing is the point. The fact that it requires voters to jump through multiple hoops is part of the strategy.

I don't think MAGA (Republicans are extinct) has thought this process all the way through. It appears as if the MAGA team will have a more difficult time to comply (older MAGAs, less tech savvy younger MAGAs, poor white MAGAs and of course white supremacist and fascist MAGAs- "them is good people)

This voter photo ID doesn't make sense. When I go to my precinct to vote they have my name on a list of registered voters. Why would someone go to the trouble of attempting to impersonate me so they could vote illegally? For one vote? It's absurd.

I got all my documentation in order. For reasons that don't matter, it cost almost 1k. I doubt most would be willing to pay all the fees or track down where to get certain documents.
