Yeah this definitely isn't Geoff Keighley sucking up to Rockstar at all. For reference, Nominee's were announced before that date every single year prior, this is the latest deadline ever in TGA, and it's entirely just to let GTA 6 in. Fuck off TGA.

its the... biggest video game release of all time, fucking duh its going to be included in the celebration of video games of this year

your post is missing the fact that this is the most anticipated video game release ever

And you are missing the fact that it has nothing to do with my post. The point of my post is that TGA is showing GTAVI special treatment. If it made the deadline, fine, it's in TGA, thats inevitable. But the special treatment isn't fair on every other game, despite what GTA6 represents for industry

Yeah, let's make way for the game that is being used to advocate for gamers losing their right to own their games. Yeah, Lets make way for the game that will be the catalyst for loss of physical media in the future. Let's just suck up to Rockstar because why wouldn't we? Fuck off Geoff Keighley.

Gonna limit replies since I have been proven wrong here. Turns out the regular cutoff day is just conveniently the day after the games release. Don't fully understand why "The Friday before Thanksgiving" is the decider, but I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm wrong. bsky.app/profile/clou...

Categorically false. The cut off is _ALWAYS_ the Friday before Thanksgiving. bsky.app/profile/shin...

For the most part at least. I'm not backing down on GTAVI being the catalyst to bad things in the gaming industry, everything before now is evidence enough of that. But eligibility in TGA? yeah, My bad.

Huh, I find that a weirdly specific metric to go by. Why not just pick a specifc date and make that the cutoff every year? I admit I'm still skeptical, But alas, I'll hold my hands up and say that I'm likely wrong on this. I appreciate the information. 🙂

To be fair for all the failures of Keighley and TGA I don’t think it’s TGA’s responsibility to only recognise games that offer physical media. Plus there’s an argument (that I kind of agree with) that if you push GTA’s TGA nomination to 2027 you basically kill the award for all of that year.

It's not about only for physical games for me. Sony is blantantly using GTAVI being a digital release to push that them going digital only is okay actually, and I'm sure other bigger companies will see the money made from it and make the same conclusion.

Their focus on controlling what games we own, plus the amount of people laid off from Rockstar for no good reason, all make it so that GTAVI will set a bad precedent for gaming as a whole. The fact that Geoff and TGA are more than happy to make way for them just shows how little they care for gamers

Neither scenario is ideal but I feel squeezing it into 2026 is less bad, GTA can still lose this year there’s been a lot of great stuff. Plus GTA’s consideration will be stunted reviewers may not have even completed it by the time they need to file their vote.
