Absolutely extraordinary. The Democrats conceded *nothing* and got everything they demanded. They said no ICE/CBP funding, and that's precisely what happened. In other words, they did not cave. At all. But the GOP did—completely.

House passes the Senate-approved DHS funding bill by a voice vote. It funds everything in DHS except ICE/CBP, including TSA, FEMA, Coast Guard, CISA. This ends a 75-day shutdown. Bill now goes to Trump to become law. www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...

And it's even more humiliating for Republicans. After the Senate GOP caved to Dems, the House GOP got pissed and put up a lengthy fight. But then they caved, too.

The Senate unanimously passed this bill four weeks ago with the same plan to fund ICE/CBP party-line. After a lot of Johnson criticism and GOP infighting, the House passes the same bill by voice vote with zero recorded dissent. A full month added to the shutdown, same result.

Yes, Republicans are moving forward with a plan to pass ICE funding through reconciliation. But that requires only a simple majority, so the GOP can pass that regardless of what Democrats do. The point is Dems exercised complete control over everything they *could* control.

If Republicans scrapped the filibuster, they could pass whatever they wanted whenever they wanted, no? All seems like performative nonsense knowing that reality. I sure hope if Dems win the Senate one of the first things they do scrap the filibuster.

R's may want it. If the Dems are in control they won't have a choice. I hope to God Dems don't keep it. They need to scrap it to protect democracy and the planet against fascism. Now is not the time for delay.

Like I’m not slamming the Dems necessarily — clearly the GOP wanted to do it in one package for some reason — but genuinely confused as to why this was fought over for months if it had no material impact on the outcome

It wasn't fought over between Dems and the GOP. It was fought over between the GOP and the GOP! I mean, yes, at first, the GOP wanted the Dems to roll over and play dead. But then the Senate GOP caved, which caused the House GOP to lose its mind. But then the House GOP caved too.
