Do they actually intend to replace the spritework with this? Even the 2D redraw looks worse (like many HD redraws, even human-made ones like Joe & Mac HD just miss on most of the character of the original) Why do they keep thinking that modern = "better"?

I don't think this will replace the sprite, just like the 'museum artwork something that just comes with the collection.

Even as an extra it feels not worth bothering with at all, you know what I'm saying? 🥱

The proportions of the guy and the cows eyes are the thing which sticks out to me most. The proportions in the sketch seem totally different to the final render which is a bit unusual right?
