Does this... remove the backend entirely? Is the client fetching straight from the repository?

you can indeed fetch straight from the repository with the read-only client. this probably won't scale for huge repos or vast amounts of data. if you want to write into it, I'd highly recommend using a bff.

Gotcha. I've wanted to dive into ATProto but I'm so used to Workers and the persistent socket connection aspect has been hard to reconcile. Hadn't considered fetching direct from the client. The personal site use case seems nice. May try that.
