Is it too picky to mention excessive optional chaining in a review? I hate the noise with it but it doesn't seem like a big deal to most.

The chaining alone isn't a problem imo, but it is often a signal you should move some condition further up the stack and filter out nullability earlier. Then lower code never has to worry about it. Not always possible, but I always aim for that
