As the heatwave continues and people head to the pool, a very important point about drowning - the movies get it wrong. In real life, drowning can be silent. There's no splashing, waving, or yelling. That's why you have to always watch kids at the pool. 1/3

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) has a PSA and more info about the signs of drowning: Mouth at water level. Head titled back. Facing shore or poolside. Climbing ladder motion. Body vertical. Learn more: ndpa.org/DrowningDoes... 2/3

I lifeguarded in high school and saved a kid who had gone under when their dad turned his back for less than a minute. She was grabbing the side of the pool but let go and pushed off in a split second. Then she was fully under water, obscured by people who didn't even know she was there.

Literally same. A little wall walker, kids who can’t swim yet but hold on to the side of the pool. She happened to be in front of me when she slipped under. Silently, straight down, eyes as big as saucers. I pulled her up so fast, but if were on the other side of the pool or looking the other way?

She was under for less than 5 or so seconds but it was enough to make her panic and her dad yelled at me for upsetting her. like, my man. This could have been a lot worse.

When my youngest was a toddler, we had an inground pool. My husband and our two friends were in the pool, my five year old and her friend were sitting on the side of the pool. My toddler was out of the pool with her lifevest on. I went inside to get drinks. When I came back out, toddler had taken

Cont/ off her lifevest and fallen into the pool. The five year old friend had jumped in and pulled her up before anyone had noticed she had fallen in. There was no splash, no scream. Thank God for the friend and her quick reaction. Drowning is the LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN CHILDREN 1-4.

Mom trusted the county pool lifeguard was watching. Lifeguard called Adult Swim *after I had tripped and was in distress* and walked away. I was 7, still small, so no he did not wait for people to get out. Luckily one of my feet touched bottom. The lifeguards blamed me for 'not obeying'.

Nobody including me realized until after long I was an adult that I was actively '5 seconds and I'd start taking in water' drowning. Religious consequences for years because we were in a full immersion baptism church and most people treated my submersing aversion as an overreaction to nothing.

I've seen it. My husband saved the kids because he didn't want me drown trying. Other people just wallked by, some oblivious, others mildly curious but not willing to stop and get involved. The reaction of most of those ppl still haunts me. On another note, I still think my husband is a super hero.

This is the EXACT POSITION I was in at age 4yo when MY SISTER (age 10yo) SAVED ME FROM DROWNING in a hotel swimming pool. I did NOT YELL, WAVE, or SPLASH. Only tried to dog paddle (my BODY VERTICAL) my way to the pool steps, but the jets kept pushing me away. NOW 70yo. Alive bc my sister noticed. ❤️

And please be aware that your fat friend can drown too! I’ve seen two cases where very large guys were clearly about to drown and their friends ignored them because ‘fat people float’! Both were saved by bystanders, but the friends deserve a kick in their behinds!
