Council expansion: Good Lapd oversight: Good Ranked choice voting: useless, increases burden on voters to use strategic, dishonest voting, makes it harder to discern policy preferences from voters

RCV reduces party power. It's more honest, not dishonest, in that candidates have to run on policy. It also means candidates can work together instead of creating false binary choices where they don't need to exist. You are also much more likely to get candidates in the general that people trust.

In practice, the only true part of that is that it reduces party power. Because spoiler effects persist, notably the center squeeze, it still requires strategic voting—more than a single vote, even—& strategic voting is a fundamentally dishonest signal of voter preference Party power isn’t bad

But if you want an honest signal of voter preferences, you need approval voting & multi-member districts & this all only really matters if you assume a dominant majority of voters are motivated by stable, rational, considered & coherent policy preferences, rather than a grab bag of vibes & enemies

I don’t think RCV moves us toward approval, and while I agree approval is much better for getting the policy preferences of voters, I’m not sure the majority of voters have coherent policy preferences or are interested in developing them
