I always tell new engineers to be cautious when using AI for code gen. Even worse than sneaking trash into your code, it hampers your learning. IMO it's hard to learn how to code if you're not typing code into your IDE. I highly encourage asking the AI questions though, that's an amazing use case.

AI arguments? Is this really a hot take? Learning to code in 2025 and beyond, I guess I will say this until someone can change my mind.

Hard agree, I had codegen fix some type issue for me, and while it saved me a ton of time, I have gained no new knowledge whatsoever. It has a time and place, but if you are still learning make sure that you do it the hard way before you let LLMs auto-complete everything for you.

Yes, I can tell it hampers my learning even as an experienced engineer trying to learn a new tool. And that's with all the underlying mental models already built out. I can only imagine the impact if you're still trying to find your footing
