It really is something no one wants to hear... but the simplest way to create reading comprehension is to make kids read books at their level at home for around 1 hour a day starting in 1st grade. There is no practical amount of books assigned for class work that makes up that basic skill practice.

Cont: We try to instill the basic skills that make up comprehension, but the practice never catches up. Analogy: We teach kids how to shoot a basketball, but they only practice for 30 minutes twice a week for a few years. They can explain what the skill is but cannot actually make shots well.

Cont: Most kids would be much better off if instead of English class, they had to read for an hour 5 days a week. I challenge people to try this (if possible.) - As an English teacher, I can't use class completely ( or mostly) for reading, even if its probably the best and simplest solution.

Alternatively, you can read all about it from the experimental psychologists who are internationally respected for studying reading comprehension. 🤷‍♀️ The real cogsci. 😊

"We set out with the intention of measuring what we value but end up valuing what we can measure." Can't for the life of me remember where that quote came from but it has stuck with me ever since I first read it.

I spent two years on Twitter trying to communicate on basic issues. There are many things I didn't understand at first but one of them is that many people don't read. They scan the first four or five words and guess the rest, resulting in hundreds of non sequitur responses.
