Well said. I am taking more breaks from the "noise" of social media. It clears the mind for the next time I meet someone, from any creed, for the first time and have a real conversation where "we" are all valued. Humanity matters.

> We need to teach children and adults alike that the scoreboard reality they see online isn’t entirely accurate. Agreed, but what they see online has constructed an _electorate_ that is accurate, at least in the United States. Not _everyone_ or even most, but enough to screw everything up.

I notice differences between Bluesky and Threads. On Threads, people will attack someone on a post they don't agree with instead of scrolling past. The post won't even be controversial, something like AITA because I won't let my brother move in or I won't give my sister money. People then attack OP.

The softly spoken philosopher shouts the loudest. At the peak of my short foray into social media, I met Mr Stewart Reynolds. Full of happiness he signed a copy of his book and we exchanged witticisms, perhaps. But the sheer drudgery of these platforms, the tiny mindedness,

the cyclical and repetitive nature of these fora is truly exhausting. Even in this better place, people choose antagonism over creativity, unmanaged anger over genuine feelings. Brittlestar sees this, witnesses it daily. He is able to abstract and extract cause and effect. But for others,

who lack these higher skills, it’s a quagmire of insidiousness, an exhausting pool with no shallow end. For now I’m peering in. Hopefully Bluesky and the world can recover. It’s kinda important, folks. It’s 100% us. The good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful. Some of these we can choose.

As Tim Walz said “It’s none of your goddam business”. Perhaps too often we unintentionally or without pause for thought make it everyone’s business. Privacy and secrecy aren’t necessarily bad. Not everything needs to be public. Even cats. Unless they’re teaching us about fascism.

I’ve been saying for years that we can fix problems like Trump, for example, all we want, but until we address the root causes - ie our addiction to “shock news” and attention spans that rarely last greater than 1 minute, we’re only being reactive, not proactive. SM is the medium, we are the root.
