Also this is an ongoing process. Models currently have a shelf live of one or two years max (often much less). Even if there were no progress in training procedures, the training data continuously gets updated and refined, so models need to be trained from scratch after a while.

amazing it's weird getting comments even just the other day that are basically "why make another <thing> we already have one" like, we should have a thousand of some things! it's amazing to have a diverse variety of tools / software / objects / stuff -- why would 'one' be the answer for everyone?
