interesting thing about discussing black metal is that it can't be discussed out of context (not in a way that respects the genre) = it's impossible to talk about it on Bluesky (length) = this creates a natural "gatekeeping" mechanism that widens the gap between idiotic and intelligent perspectives

The distinct lack of black metal appreciation on Bluesky

It’s actually a shame because the 90s Norwegian Black Metal scene, in particular, is a really important stepping stone in the evolution of metal, and it always deserves *civil discussion* BUT I also recognize how BM attracts the dregs of society and no one needs to be rubbing shoulders with Nazis.

I tend to look at black metal as the "tryhard kid brother" of extreme metal, that took the Satanic panic fearmongering literally and thought being as literally evil as possible was actually the point, but luckily some bands get that it's really just music, and we don't have to become the stereotype.

Satanism may have seemed silly on the surface but when it wasn’t just theatrics & “shock value” to sell tickets, I imagine it served as a ‘watering hole’ for like-minded folks to come together and reject indoctrination That is, if god is authority then anti-authoritarianism is, by default, satanism

Exposure to "Satanism" in metal back then seemed to quickly free the mind up to looking objectively at the whole concept of spirituality and deciding as individuals whether we thought there was much of anything to it. I don't know what drives the people who stick with Satanism in that context.
