Post

This is a very important post and the responses are (predictably) disappointing. The online left, by and large, needs to stop "this tech needs to be eradicated" (it is not realistic) and start thinking about how we can prevent it from being a mass starvation or forever authoritarianism event.

I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

LLMs have definitely improved significantly over time, yet many have stuck to their years old positions on what it can do. It is unlikely to displace a majority of labor at this point, but it is going to keep improving, and the time to think and talk about the societal impacts is long overdue.

The way to the "fully automated space gay communism" is through more automation, done responsibly, with people sharing the fruits of automation. More mandatory human labor is not a virtue. I don't want to live in a world where we have to work 40 or more hours per week until we die.
