Rep. Tom Kean finally speaks after months away from Congress for a previously unexplained absence: "I was given the diagnosis of depression ... the doctors recommended I remain in the hospital to address my illness"

So Americans diagnosed with depression and formerly receiving Medicaid, should deal with it according to Kean while he receives months of mental health treatment according to his ins benefits. Unless there is fraud, every Amer shld have the same medical attention as elected pub servants.

on the one hand I hope he is recovering and on the other hand: he has the best health insurance that tax payers flip the bill for. It's time he and so many other members of Congress recognize the inequity and reality of it.

Like Republicans generally, he believes that if you've got the money, the healthcare system should have the time for you. Otherwise, if you are depressed, Republicans recommend that you jump off a bridge.

It's about time our society addressed the growing mental health crisis in our Nazi community. I guess shredding the US constitution and supporting the most criminal chief executive in the history of Western Democracy is stressful.

GOP jerk goes into mental hospital-unit for treatment-I assume using US Taxpayer paid Health Insurance WHILE denying other Americans same ability for Physical-Mental care. WHAT a selfish, corrupt turd. GOP, don't spout lies about hospitals admitting all without means to pay-THAT is utter GOP 💩

That doesn’t excuse going AWOL, on the taxpayers dime. He did find the time and energy to trade securities for personal gain — so, there’s that. Public service? Not so much. Laws need to change so that elected officials can be recalled if they are not delivering on the job reqs.

Must have been VERY serious depression for him to be hospitalised. VERY SERIOUS! Hope he appreciated his tax payer funded Senators Healthcare cover, the sort of cover he voted to deny his constituents!🤬🤮

I don’t know why they won’t just admit that he is suffering from addiction, unless the addiction he’s suffering from is one that’s “unacceptable” (i.e., kinks, not drinks). Anyway, I hope he gets clobbered in November and gets himself some good help.

Well, the speech was surprising in that admitting mental health issues is probably much harder for Republicans. Regardless of his politics, I am glad he said what he did. It may help people of his party admit they need help.

Congress and staff: Choose:gold-level ACA policy. Fed subsidies [taxpayer] cover 72% cost of premiums. Pay approx. 28% premiums through pre-tax payroll deductions. Free/low-cost care through the Office of the Attending Physician. Free outpatient care:military facilities in the D.C. area. (Snopes)

Per New Rebublic : While missing in action, Kean's office continued to operate, he was catching Ubers/rideshares and using Amtrak in San Francisco, continued to approve staff travel expenses, issue constituent newsletters, and actively trade personal stocks during his absence. Kinda smelly...

He should have resigned when he was taken out of commission by depression (as reported) or whatever. He failed to serve his constituents, and failed to act responsibly. I can sympathize with depression, but not with irresponsible acts.

Psychosis is much more common than most realize--depression with delusions, paranoia and even hallucinations. Very frightening for the family, even if the patient is not a danger to themselves or others, and thus loved ones may be instrumental to the patient being hospitalized.

Guessing that at least half of the absence was due to his inept advisors trying to come up with a viable excuse that wouldn't raise the scorn of MAGA. Or get him primaried (he ran unopposed for GOP nomination - election was 3 weeks ago).

Hooman has bipolar disorder (curious if he should admit that, but if it helps combat stereotypes, ok), but yeah.... they dont hold you that long for nothing. Been through it. Its the only reason I'm not wishing this man ill willl.

The correct take here is that Kean is a hypocrite for helping to gut health care in this country while taking advantage of Congress' superior medical insurance, not that he's faking his illness. Many people with depression, anxiety, etc., need significant time to address their illness.

I wonder if anyone who was affected by the Medicaid cut he helped to advance, will be able to "stay" in the hospital for the depression he may have helped cause. You're usually sent home same day after an operation; yet you stay in the hospital for depression. It's a different world.

I’d like to think that the downward spiral of his father’s Republican Party was a small part of his depression. But the hypocrisy with that whole party and the men and women in it is off the charts.

During his 4-mo absence "Kean missed more than 140 votes... "...Only former members Marjorie Taylor Greene- Georgia & Doug LaMalfa-California, have voted less. Greene *resigned in January, the same month LaMalfa *died." Not dead; not quit. www.njspotlightnews.org/2026/06/all-...

njspotlightnews.orgAll eyes on Tom Kean, Capitol Hill’s most mysterious non-voter | NJ Spotlight NewsThe Republican representative will return today, with assurances that he'll explain his absence. Here's what he missed while he was away

Imagine any working class person getting that kind of treatment, a few months in a hospital. If you're lucky they might give you some medication that makes you feel tired and a little less depressed. Now get back out there in the FIELDS, the shareholders NEED PROFIT!!!!

As much as I'm not a fan of Fetterman these days, he was much more open about his issue with depression. And I don't believe he traded stocks while he was recovering either. Kean doesn't represent me in NJ, but I hope his district thinks twice about voting him back into office.

Will this change his future votes? Tom Kean Jr. had the medical coverage he needed while he was off work for depression. Many New Jerseyans live with depression every day without that same security, while he supported cuts to Medicaid. That is the hypocrisy. Vote accordingly.

To fucking bad we here in America really don’t care you have health insurance we pay for it . while you help take the American people’s insurance away.poor little white boy like Americans are not depressed because of asses like you . Fuck you

HE NEEDS TO RESIGN AND GET A JOB THAT HE CAN DO AND GET OFF THE TAXPAYER TIT....and if he can't cut it in the real world with an employer who doesn't allow him to get away with hiding in a closet, oh well. WE DO IT EVERYDAY in the real world. Resign, get a job that you must show up for. Period.

Supporting the OBBB is enough to make anyone depressed. If you had a conscience. Evidence suggests that didn’t apply in his case though. Didn’t seem more depressed than the rest of us. He just used it as an excuse to take some R&R on the taxpayer dime while enriching himself on the stock market.

The healthy thing for him to do is resign. Yes, many people function managing mental health and employment. But he's responsible for the public in his current position. He's placing himself and others at risk.

How could anyone want this person as a representative? He missed nearly 1/6 of his current term with no communication to the public. Who is to say it won’t happen again? (And no, I’m not shaming mental illness)

I wonder if these assholes understand, If he was an everyday American making under 50k a year. This option would not have been an option. They would have given him a script that probably was wrong but, no money to test so... Eat the pills and back to work! Don't miss a day, or it's the ditch!

Well, isn't it nice for him that he has such superb medical coverage and such understanding employers that he could take 3 months off to receive medical treatment for which he didn't have to pay. We should all be so lucky. Really. We all should. #VoteBlue

I use to work at McLean Hospital. In the early 90's insurance companies started limiting the length of stay for psychiatric pt. Unless someone was undergoing ECT tx, today it would be nearly impossible for someone to stay a month, never mind months, getting inpatient psych care for depression.

Good for me but not for thee. First, he’s not telling all the story. Second, how sweet for him to enjoy his premium health benefits paid for by US taxpayers. I h.at.e. these lying privileged magats passionately.

Missed more than 100 votes in the House. Never occurred to him to resign his seat, so his district could be represented. Extreme selfishness. And now he wants to run for reelection.
