So this is a post 1600s monastery setting? Although the time the potato would be widely adopted it would be more likely around 1700-1800.

they're rutabagas but more importantly this does not take place in any real time or place because a world where an opossum is telling a dick joke to a crocodile is not a world where I have to care about historical accuracy
