Office of the Speaker of the National Assembly declares martial law declaration invalid 2h48m after declaration Helicopters seen moving toward National Assembly, crowds outside chanting "IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT"

Aides, National Assembly members, workers still barricaded in the hall right in front of the National Assembly doors. Footage from inside does not show soldiers. The government has obviously not ordered them to stand down.

They can't confirm if it's a full retreat—some of the soldiers are leaving outside. Speaker has demanded the military that has entered the National Assembly to leave immediately.

The Office of the President has to convene to officially stand down martial law but there is no official statement from the president currently.

National Assembly member and SNU constitutional law scholar Cho Kuk is making a statement to the press using strong words—the president needs to stand down the declaration IMMEDIATELY, to ignore this is tantamount to a military rebellion, the declaration ITSELF was illegal and he must answer for it

—that there is no telling what the president will do, that the president MUST BE IMPEACHED, that the Korean police authority must ARREST the president, that we do not know what impact, what SHOCK this has sent to the Korean people and to our society—he MUST BE IMPEACHED (emphasized 2nd time)

MBC reporter cannot see any army beyond the barricade (the barricaded doors themselves are glass and she can't see anyone outside them). Unconfirmed reports that the army has left the National Assembly main building.

Helicopters have taken off from behind the National Assembly, military ground vehicles have retreated from National Assembly Citizens outside shouting ARREST YOON SUK YOL I foresee a long winter of mass protests

Footage of military walking away from National Assembly Barricades are still up, still unconfirmed if all of the army has retreated from the building MBC now connecting to Office of the President in Yongsan District, all reporters on that beat have been kicked out of the building

Office of the Speaker has said all military has left the National Assembly building. MBC confirms all military personnel and equipment have left the back plaza behind the National Assembly main building.

The American vice state department head (? don't want to bother looking up what that is, don't care) said something about hoping for democratic whatever America, come collect your clown

Embattled opposition leader Lee Jae-myung making a live statement—Martial law declaration was illegal to begin with as the president did not receive National Assembly approval first, and its illegality was verified by the ConLaw 77(5) vote just now.

Another National Assembly member (did not catch his name) telling all military personnel that following the vote, carrying out martial law declaration is to break the law—that even entering the National Assembly as military is to break the law.

Footage of military leaving the gates of the National Assembly grounds and NA workers sliding the gate shut behind them. (What a shot!) Main gates remain closed, and protesters still protesting (this is Korea, there's always a protest, especially in front of the National Assembly)

I guarantee you that in the following weeks, beginning tomorrow but especially this weekend, Gwanghwamun Plaza (site of protest since at least the Joseon Dynasty times) is going to be deluged with protesters. bsky.app/profile/anto...

I am *astonished* Yoon tried to pull this off in 2024, in THIS country, after EVERYTHING he must've seen our citizenry do in recent years and throughout history. I will ALWAYS believe in Korean democracy. ARREST YOON SUK YEOL IMPEACH YOON SUK YEOL

I think that's it from me—we are currently waiting for the Office of the President to respond but it's very late and he's probably, I dunno, too busy licking his wounds or planning his prison cell color theme or something.
