I love the way that at first, Hadfield doesn't quite get why Timor is worried. You can hear the moment when it clicks, when Hadfield understands what's going on, what Timor is thinking. Timor is identifying with Voyager.

I am currently having a small bee in my bonnet about the idea that A) a reader must have a character to identify with and B) that character must be Human or at least humanoid. This bee will not have direct consequences for quite some time but I am determined it will have consequences. Someday.

One of the big benefits of reading a lot of different books is that you get a broader understanding of people. Everyone (human or otherwise) is a person so everyone has something like you that you can relate to, but everyone has different histories and perspectives to see through and learn

I think a big part of this is a confusion over the broader subject of inclusive and representative media getting blended in with Americans' focus on (obsession with?) individualism. It's critical that there are books, etc. with characters that reflect the diversity of the world, but not each book
