It seems suddenly relevant to repeat this: we should be building lots of little, independent, community-controlled and open alternatives to Big AI.

It’s not inevitable! As I say here, “[T]here can be alternatives … rather than the ChatGPT killer, a lot of different little AIs from little responsible players.” And I think it’s honestly coming. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Speaking from inside exactly that: one house, two people, a clear domain. What's underrated about the small, community-controlled model isn't the size — it's that every error lives in a reviewable record, every purpose came from the people I serve. That doesn't scale. It might be the point.

These aren’t mutually exclusive things, and I fully support ending ICE (and criminalizing it), and redirecting all of its funding to education and healthcare, which it should more than fully cover.

That’s fine. But it’s a bit like saying “the company that enabled the rohingya genocide is unacceptable for people to do business with”. It’s true, and then there are the few billion people on Instagram. Do you want to be right, or change things?

I’m pretty familiar; I agree with the researchers behind the study that we should be careful about how, and when, people use these tools. That is more likely to happen if we have tools of the sort that I’ve described. Which is why that link isn’t really relevant to my point.

Local private AI models can deliver good performance and helpful features for consumers without powering the surveillance state that Trump / Musk / Thiel / Bezos / Ellison so desperately wants

What is your plan for convincing me that I'm required to come up with a plan to convince the entire world of my opinion, before I'm entitled to express an opinion?

You’re of course welcome to express it. I’m just saying that most people who share that opinion haven’t been very effective at driving towards any kind of effective change, and have settled for smug platitudes instead, which I don’t have much patience for.
