How broken is today's frontend culture? A friend points out that the median *mobile* page is now larger than a copy of DOOM (2.6 MiB vs. 2.48 MiB), the 75th percentile page is more than 2 DOOMs, and the P90 mobile page is 4.5x the size of DOOM: httparchive.org/reports/page...

httparchive.orgHTTP Archive: Page WeightThis report tracks the size and quantity of many popular web page resources. Sizes represent the number of bytes sent over the network, which may be compressed.

That's content. The grief is about the 1.5MB of JavaScript being loaded on a page that should serve the content and not be a photo editing app or a game in the browser. It's a glitch in incentives that would make things better if awareness is raised. At least IMHO

That is fair. But that is not what he is saying. It at least not what the data he is pointing to is saying

I... are you even looking at the data to say this because I have it pulled up? There is one segment relative to video size, and even a cursory understanding of video formats would say that yes, work can be done to decrease file size with video formats and the transfer of that data

As I've admitted to in a sibling thread - I based this comment on seeing OP's talk (and chatting after the conference) and not reading the linked material. (I'll sure get to it, but too allovertheplace with my attention for it right now) Sorry for the confusion

Oh no you're fine, I think Andreas is in the wrong in their interpretation of the data. There is one single data point where it would suggest that "large videos and images" are the issue the original person they replied to was talking about and it is an odd assertion on their point

The 2.5M number he is primarily because websites have richer content and is not because of "broken frontend culture" I am definitely not denying that most website could and should be optimized, but pointing to the 2.5MB number and claiming the culture is broken is just dumb.
