Extended deployments take a serious toll on service members, their families, and military readiness. Guard and Reserve members deserve better planning, clear communication, and respect for the sacrifices they make. Our troops shouldn’t have to pay the price for poor leadership and planning.

Being a VFW and serving a year in Thailand during the Viet Nam war, a year is one hell of a long time. Our pilots served until they flew 100 sorties. They earned their right to go home. Hegseth would have made them fly 200 sorties. Hegseth needs to be in prison, or on the front line!

That's unfair, it is due to abysmal planning, not nearly as good as awful planning. Hegseth was depending on a Short Victorious War, not one where the enemy had any balls whatsoever. For all his obsession with masculinity, you would think he would realize that other cultures produce men too.

As a mother of a soldier set to deploy for his 3rd tour somewhere, the desperation and longing you feel waiting for them to return is intense. Counting down the days. His wife & children missing him. For this time to be extended would be excruciating.

Absolutely shameful on this government and the DOD planning. Not that it matters but if I remember correctly, and it’s been over 20 years since I’ve been in the Army, but is it a deployment more than nine months considered a PCS move?

Super dumb question but when I was deployed in 2003 to Iraq, it took an act of Congress to extend our deployments past 364 days. Is that no longer the case? Or was it specific to that conflict?

You suggest that Hegseth actually had a plan. Plan suggests a clearly stated goal, a series of objectives, milestones to measure progress, contingencies in case of obstacles or failure to reach objectives, & a clear definition of success. Hegseth never progressed beyond bomb & keg party.

A year-plus extension results from running force generation on vibes instead of a plan. Guard and Reserve aircrews are your retention base, and burning them out to cover a staffing hole loses pilots faster than training produces them.

There is a reason why inexperienced and incompetent people should not be in charge of critical govt. agencies.

I served 24 years in the Royal Air Force. I did some really shitty deployments, probably the worst were in NATO’s support for America in the mid east. One thing that REALLY fucks you up and enrages you, is someone/anything messing with your Endex/goeshomey date.

If they decide it is not, the enlisted person faces a range of punishments from reduction in rank to less than honorable discharge which strips them of their benefits and military record and likely prevents them from working in many civilian jobs.
