He was impeached and his law license was suspended for five years. Some may quibble about the harshness (or lack thereof), but there was a penalty of some sort. Dems didn’t pretend that his behavior wasn’t problematic.

My point is that he started us down the road of finding excuses for bad character in presidents just because that person was fulfilling one or more political goals of his party.
