Threads is an echo chamber on the left, Twitter on the Right, I hope this stays a sane normal place where some disagreement can be politely explored. Too much to ask??

It does seem to be a place where your feed can be mostly cat pics if you want, which is probably better. fwiw I don't think Twitter was an echo chamber when I left. It was just a regular chamber with a lot of very noisy turds in it.

Not too much to ask at all. I like to get different views than mine and have discussions. It's one of the reasons I follow you and listen to things that are on the Bulwark. It's a different angle for me to see, and I do appreciate that.

Depends on how much trolling floods the space and how many choose to engage with it. Xwitter trolls want to agitate and instigate to provoke negative reaction to feed their addiction. How others engage with the bullshit will determine the sanity of this space.

True. But occasionally I can see one small area of agreement with some of those that do talk about faith. And when someone here attacks them, I tell them I don't support that type of treatment for anyone. The whole two sets of rules has to be challenged whether we win or not.

As long as we all remain on earth one, I’m cool, but when they start to talk about jan 6 being the governments fault and not MAGA or any other multitude of bat crap crazy conspiracies, they are not welcome. There has to be one platform that remains crazy conspiracy free.

I mean, yeah, Adam, if someone supports a person who wishes to take away many of my cherished rights, then we can't politely do anything, other than for me to politely tell them to fuck off. So, politely, former rep who loves Reagan, a shitty neoliberal, fuck off.

Fair enough. One carat, those who start out don’t worry, he won’t be that bad or, Democrats did this to themselves or, I didn’t know enough about Kamala Harris but all of the horrible things I know about him made him a better choice. Those people and their views do not need further exploration.

as a conservative, I can get behind this sentiment. If bluesky can become a place where discourse can happen in a sane manner, then it will continue to grow. Become another leftist echo chamber and this app will slowly fade into irrelevance.

It does not seem like too much to ask, but such politeness in the dialogue of politics has been greatly diminished since Newt Gingrich turned partisan battles into bloodsport, wrecked Congress, and paved the way for Trump’s rise.

Please help me understand why conservatives want to limit government and especially cut funding for the safety net for the elderly, the disabled and the working poor.

I come from a place of empathy when it comes to Trump supporters. I am 100% ready to have dialogue with people who want to understand what's going on. Name-calling is not the way. How do we find people from the right who want earnest and honest talk? I have ideas and would really like to try!

I know people like that, too. They vowed they didn't like Trump but then changed their minds because of something that scared them; the border, the Ukraine war, and inflation. I'm trying hard to have patience because I know they're not looking at the information I am.

Depends on if MAGA people are blocked as soon as they arrive by most people on here. Sane people can have disagreements, and hold conversations, those whose entire lives have become a cognitive dissonance snowball rolling downhill can not.

Too late for the sky of blue. It’s already an echo chamber for blues like that hippy Lister. I’m afraid you will have to hear people give differing opinions. Like chicken vindaloo. I hate it. Lister bathes in it. Smeghead!

A great leader I know used to tell me that to solve a problem, we need to put it on one side of the table and the rest of us on the other side. I imagine my political views are different than yours, but I appreciate your views and know we will be better by working together.

I've seen quite a few right wing trolls brigading this place from twitter while spreading their hateful rhetoric. The mods don't seem to care about banning trolls which makes me think some of them might be right wingers in disguise. This app won't last with such rampant bigotry going unchecked.

Too much to ask. We need the left, so no one is left behind. The reds have gone full fascist and there is no way to talk to them. It shouldn't be red verse the left, but the Felon elect in chief is a divider. Biden was a uniter. We have to stop giving fascists hall passes. 🚬😎

Post-truth MAGA Cult in the USA is NOT a rational movement which can be appealed to with reason & rationale. Most MAGA can't be rationally debated with when facts mean nothing. They've been so conditioned by years of Trump/Putin/trolls "oft-repeated big lies" & "antithesis of truth" radicalism.

But MAGAs infantry is coming to a big awakening. When Trump abandons them all and they are left to suffer with the rest of US, they will be pissed. Not at US at him for the betrayal and the numbers of the resistance will expand like lava from a volcano.

Exactly this. They are emotionally attached to their positions, and you cannot get them to move using reason and facts. Anything that causes them emotional discomfort gets dismissed as "fake news".

Refreshing to talk about rational policies again instead of insults, lies, & correcting misinformation. Is it too much to ask Social Media to be curated for integrity? Beliefs based on trolls shouldn't count for freedom speech.

A few thoughts: 1. I long for a space that’s not adversarial. Not every space requires debate. 2. I’ve yet to see that Left vs Right “debates” are ever productive. What’s the point? 3. Some differences aren’t matters for “debate.” Someone’s right to exist, for example. So, yes. Too much to ask

Trump pp licker has arrived. This is funny coming from a guy who worships Trump who lies every day, and elongated muskrat who got community noted sometimes 3 times a day until he made a call to the team 😂

As if it would matter. We have mountains of proof, including straight from Trump's mouth, but you people ignore it. You then spew lies which are easily proven to be lies. Finally you project what you are on to everyone else. And how pathetic your avatar is Trump. You have NO life!

Remember when Trump said Nancy Pelosi failed to summon the National Guard on January 6? That’s hilarious. Another lie from IQ 45.

Remember that Democratic president who avoided giving back documents he stole for several months, and then moving them around his resort, and then taking one about sensitive nuclear information in a rock and showing it to a buddy of New Jersey? Oh wait no that was the Republican president.

Oh yeah, and aren’t they the ones who claim China pays tariffs to the US for the goods it exports? Oh wait, no, that’s Republicans.

I have tried many times to politely have an intelligent conversation with magas. You can't have an intelligent conversation with a cultist. I'm an ex-republican. I don't block repubs, but there's very few of them left. I honestly don't understand why they are still in the party of facists led by 45.

WHISTLING DIXIE: When FoxNews is your primary source of information nothing good comes of it. Conspiracy theorists, Q-anon weirdos, antivaxer dupes, ignorant doofuses, assorted losers and cult of Trump .. are created. It’s why I avoid these “know nothing” losers. It’s better that way.

I know a fair number of conservatives who are not MAGA. Most of them are no longer Republican, but I suspect the ones that remain do so out of either habit or stubbornness. I also know many people who voted for Trump due to being woefully misinformed, but that's a convo for another time.

We are the only people on my street who were born in America. All my neighbors are immigrants. I loved the diversity when I moved here. BEFORE the election, my neighbors started reminding me to vote straight republican...

I believe our democracy will be tested. Autocracy or Oligarchy are as likely as Democracy. We need a means to stop lies from being viewed as authoritative or we will be doomed to the whims of the powerful.

I was taken back... And asked them why. I brought up issues... And they admitted they knew nothing about the issues. But some guy on the radio they trusted said to vote for him and they were... And they would get their families and friends to vote for him too

I think the really hard part on Twitter is that you genuinely cannot tell if they're a bot, or a fake profile that's just an outrage farmer. There are TONS of astroturf accounts, many powered by chat bot talking points too. Elon did NOT purge the bots, just just monetized them for himself.

Read your responses, and I do not think this is a reason to give up. When you make logical arguments backed by evidence, very tiny seeds of doubt are planted in minds. Small changes in trajectory can lead to enormous changes over time, and you may not see all the fruits of your efforts.

They will sprout, maybe in unrecognizable ways. It often seems like people aren't listening especially if they're following a cult of personality, but in my mind arguments made are never completely lost in a void. In this category, perfection is a moving target.

It’s the lies spread by social media and far right propaganda on the radio/TV that is brainwashing people. I have to admit that I had no idea how much power algorithms, disinformation and misinformation has over the minds of humans. It is damaging to democracy.

We are kindred spirits. I currently am registered democrat (since 2016) but describe myself as “politically homeless.” I won’t discuss politics with the MAGA people in my life anymore, because there is no convincing them. I’ve been a litigator for 25 years. I’m pretty convincing. But not with them

They were raised with the creed "I'll vever vote for a Democrat." When the Republican Party changed and became a radical party, they clung to that. When Trump took it over and made it MAGA, they told themselves he would act presidential and his policies were important. This time they knew better.

You are asking a very important question: the GOP is no longer conservative, and yet most Republicans didn't leave. Did they ever believe in conservatism or was it just a club they used to fight against the "other" side that they've made no attempt to understand or compromise with?

The main thing is election interference and integrity The right says that mail in ballots are illegal and obviously they’re not because Americans living abroad have used absentee ballots long before the right even opened their ignorant, uninformed poorly educated mouths even T used a mail ballot

Just as important is the explicit recognition that we both have to agree we have different versions of polite, and work to calibrate that as we talk. We kinda have to do the same thing with facts too - acknowledge we have different truths, and work to deconstruct the misinformation.

I used to love a good debate more than most. I remember in college I had a Republican professor. We would debate back and forth in class but.. there was a mutual respect. It taught me the art of debate and how it was so important to listen but that art form is gone. I miss it! 😢

Disagreement with others is the only way to fix a problem. If no one disagrees, everyone becomes complacent, and nothing changes. Of course, it should be done with respect.

I want diverse opinions. I’m not liberal or democrat I am open minded. I can have opinions on different things. I would love to chat with someone here who could give a sane explanation on why Trump is better for Americans. But I only see electoral maps. I’m loosing hope.

They believe everything is fake and there is zero accountability. There is no constructive dialogue when you’re talking to a brick wall but at least a brick wall doesn’t also call me names.

You know, I am not clear on what you all claim in an echo chamber. You select people you follow. You select what you want to read. You select who you want to listen to in replies. If your feed is an echo chamber, then that is of your own doing.

By suggesting Threads is the liberal equivalent of the right wing dumpster fire that is Twitter is a false equivalency. Threads has a centralized moderation police that makes it hard for the ideological information spread you see on Twitter.

"Sane" in my definition would be to NOT elect a proven incompetent, delusional, whiny, money-grubbing rapist and treason weasel as POTUS just so he can stay out of prison. With sincere respect, as I don't know you..."sane" is out of the window here. This is insane on it's face.

What you are saying is true. I often hesitate to give my thoughts or opinions on topics because of rude and hateful replies. If a writer posts something that is only meant to be an insult or hateful, and not respectful discourse, then they should be ignored or blocked.

Of course, you are! But just be cognizant of the perspectives of both sides and weigh what impact both sides might have not just on you but to our country as well! Every citizen is responsible for safeguarding our Constitution (off soap box!) ☺️

Agreed, but I think every citizen should also be open to hear opinions that don’t agree with theirs, without feeling offended, no? I don’t quite agree with the “weigh the impact” to the extent that it implies I should not make my words hurt others. Not sure that’s what you mean though.

In any case, of course I should not deliberately set out to hurt others. While being respectful of all, we should also not walk on tenterhooks when making our opinions known.

Hi Adam, I totally agree. It feels like, to me anyway, that if you don't agree with everything someone says then you are stupid or following a wrong news source. My own family members are like that. I feel more independent/they are Rs, so I am wrong if I lean to D. and it should not matter.

principled republicans don’t exist. you’ve still intentionally played the game to intentionally give the billionaire class more power over me to personally benefit yourself. why would I ever meaningfully engage with you?

No, in theory, that’d be the goal, however I feel the need to call out the baseless bothsidesism… how can there be a left wing echo chamber when we can’t even agree internally that genocide is bad, or wether 1 statement about trans prisoners 6 years ago was “too much focus” in Kamala’s campaign. BS

Probably. It seems America can't have nice things. 1/3 of the country just wants to throw tantrums and break shit. 1/3 is too worried about upsetting someone. 1/3 doesn't care. Overgeneralized, but these divides won't be solved on social media, which in part got us here. I hope I'm wrong!

I wish that to be so. But unlike when I started voting - a time when political ideas were compromised on - with no one liking end results - but willing to live with them -- I don't have any tolerance for the depravity, stupidity, jealousy, and hate that is now the hallmark of the right.

The Republicans don't care about identity politics and your projection and hyperbole is something you have gotten from the media. You can identify as a tree for all I care; it's when you think identifying one makes you one - it does not. Same as transgenders. DNA cannot change biological sex.

That is bullshit. I assume you are transgender or gay, correct? I would like any quotes or otherwise evidence to suggest the Republican party doesn't think you deserve to exist in peace. As long as you're not grooming children or invading women's spaces, I don't care what you do.

here’s the issue with your perspective; those are two random nobodies that you’re attributing all leftists with. the difference is right wingers that deny the existence of multiple minorities are supported by very wealthy and successful people.

Adam, twitter has become an echo chamber for fascists, not the right. I don’t have a problem with people who want responsible government and less government intrusion in their lives, but that’s not today’s GOP.

I’d like to discuss the real issues, I’m so curious of makes one lean “conservative “. Is purely religion? Because all the other reasons such as free trade, economics, justice and family are all common issues. Drop the dogma and we are 90% on the same page.

Yes! 45’s party is neither conservative nor GOP. Bcuz it’s a lost party is no reason to simply vote for whoever is on the GOP ticket. I certainly hope they get their shyt together and figure out that enabling and obstruction is detrimental to us all. Dems need to straighten out too.

Let them have the twitter X they can yell all day at each other about the scary liberals. Sorry Adam the days of polite disagreement are long gone. We won’t bend a knee to trump or his voting block of stooges.

The strange thing about taking sides is that we often don't notice when algorithms and anger have us bowing to our own certainties. The loudest voices in our feeds aren't the deepest voices in our communities. Real change rarely arrives by retweet.

Nope nothing absolutely nothing is what the right deserves. No conversation were they just attack us. They live to cause discourse. They bring nothing of value to the table. So filled with misinformation they have no valuable information to share or to discuss. Only hate and owning the libs.

The moment we decide certain humans bring 'nothing of value,' we've begun walking a path that history warns us about. Every soul carries worth, even those who don't yet know their own value.

It would be great but I have been 'spoken' to with much name calling and disrespect by people who disagree. I am a moron. I am an idiot. I am clueless and naive. And I am sick of people like that and block each and every maga person I find.

A disagreement is whether pineapple goes on pizza. It's not whether my daughter-in-law can live or my granddaughter has the right to healthcare. So yes, it's too much to ask to allow magas and their enablers in the same space. They've never been polite and they are immoral.

" ... a sane normal place where some disagreement can be politely explored." This is key. I want to hear both the far left and far right. It is possible to like a concept idea, yet dislike the messenger. And for those who judge and boycott an opposite perspective, maybe it's time to stop.

Engaging with someone who is crazy is not worth my time. For someone like Liz Cheney, she represented the harder right wing of the GOP (not my cup of tea), but not the crazy section. I can debate with a different opinion, as long as it's backed up with facts, or reasonable assumptions.

Sometimes hard things need to be said. Rather than polite, I would use the word "Respectful." If someone says something that is reprehensible, I may not be polite in the moment. I think like energy begets like energy. Respect is about not crossing that line beyond repair. It accepts criticism too.

We can disagree on things like whether pineapple goes on pizza, or which way the toilet paper should unroll. But we cannot disagree on whether parts of OUR population are human beings or not, or whether clean air, clean water, healthcare, or housing are human rights.

Ive listened to in-depth interviews with you, maybe with Axelrod, and always liked you. Probably don’t agree with a lot of your views but I know you are a thoughtful, considered individual. What’s not to respect in that!
