Metro ESP32-S31 Proto’s Out the Door 🚇 We’ve got the Metro ESP32-P4 in the shop, so now it’s time to turn our attention (and routing muscles) to another ESP chip!

Tonight it’s the ESP32-S31, which is interesting in that it has dual RISC-V cores, a LOT of GPIO, classic BT + Thread + Zigbee in addition to Wi-Fi (rare!),

high-speed USB, built-in 16M flash and 16M PSRAM on this module, and lots of peripherals, including RGB TTL displays and a camera with a JPEG hardware codec.

It doesn’t have 5 GHz, FYI. This module is going into production soon, so we whipped up a board that lets us quickly prototype projects with Arduino-shield compatibility.

It’s got the classic headers, with high-speed USB on the main USB port, STEMMA QT I2C, reset and boot buttons, a secondary debug USB breakout, DC power, 5V and 3.3V buck converters, SDIO microSD, and a LiPo battery with a charger. 🔧

We think the main draw for this chip is the wide selection of protocols and the massive GPIO count, which has been a common request for ESP32s!
