Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

A wise man. If you can give your family a decent life, roof over their heads, food on the table, education, access to healthcare and teach them to be aware of how they can help others and make the world a better place, you have all you need. The contentment that brings is beyond price.

Musk always makes me think of this story from Kurt Vonnegut: At a party he asked Joseph Heller how he felt that their host, a hedge fund manager, made more money in a day than he had earned from Catch-22 over its whole history. Heller responds,“Yes, but I have something he will never have. ENOUGH.”

My late grandparents owned a wholesale food business. They believed "You've got to spend money to make money." Paid their employees *higher* than union wages, company-paid health insurance, sick pay, & bonuses. They saved and retired comfortably middle-class. Happiest people I ever knew. No greed.

Love this perspective. The distinction between 'having enough' and 'needing more' is the entire philosophical difference between a fulfilling life and one driven by consumerism. Thanks for sharing the wisdom!

After his every whim is satisfied, then what will he do with the remaining billions and billions, obviously nothing for the sick or hungry or uneducated, but then what? He won't take it with him, so what will any of the billionaires do?

I'm not sure I would agree with that last part. Personally I feel that if u have all of the really fancy things like a yacht and planes and still want more, then you're just greedy

It’s hoarding. No different than the people on that hoarding show. They are filling a void that will never be filled. They beat the game and now stuck on this planet with no way to ever truly feel success, happiness nor joy. Nothing will ever satisfy them.

I'll watch the entire video when I've time but I'd say: If you've *friends* whom you could invite for a beer, you're rich. If you've a mansion and a yacht, yet STILL want more, you're emotionally dead inside, and nothing will satiate your greed. The greediest people seem to be billionaires.

So many times I think about 'What if I won the lottery' and I always think of the same thing. Pay off debts, help family/friends, upgrade my living situation and splurge a bit. Thinking about how many people I could help but I can't, has made me cry. It's so depressing.

This I both loathe the rich and pity them, poor wretched souls yet rewarded in life beyond measure They know so little truth. They exercise love, not at all. If justice is not done in this world, may the fires of hell burn them to ash, and that would be merciful for those loveless THIEVES

Nails it. So fun when someone whose work I love is on the same page. I wish his movies didn't lean towards the gruesome because I'm so squeamish- his aesthetic is just gorgeous and fascinating. I love love the intricacy of his visuals and how they are so distinctive w/o being repetitious. Cool guy!

This is the core of French Canadian culture. We came here to live with little, but the little we had was more fulfilling than anything we ever had before. Songs of Freedom and majestic nature and pea soup 👏

He's so right. We're being governed by hoarders - they are literally mentally ill. That's a choice we've made, not a necessity. Tax appropriately and break up our overly concentrated economy. Everyone will be better off, even the creeps at the top.

Correct. Whenever I feel really poor, I remember a visit to Monaco where the rich walked around looking constantly unhappy that their neighbour had a bigger boat, a newer car, a more expensive handbag. I can buy my friends a beer and I know I am rich.

You are suffering a severe self destructive mental problem when too much is not enough. Wealth worship has to end. Massive amounts turns humans into self absorbed monsters that inflict unnecessary suffering on everybody else

Once again: where’s the logic on a single individual being able to hoard so much money he couldn’t possibly spend over thousands of lifetimes even if he tried to, while most everybody else keeps tethering between debt and poverty? Just because our capitalist system allows it?

I'm a disabled person, but I was thrilled to be over at our son's house for trick-or-treat. What was even better? We were able to contribute to the candy giveaway with a bunch of bags. It was a wonderful day..

Nice, but I have met the rich thru my work as a musician, can assure you all they think about is ever more money. Art, culture, beauty is something they can buy to impress each other, and not something they actually care about.

Seen some relationships where like a home grown garden! One person, there is more here than we can eat and hands Niebuhr some. Only to turn around and hear what are you doing 🤦🏼. Can be a slippery slope to be generous around others. I do it anyway.

Thanks! She put up with a lot over the past 30+ years. There's been a lot of sacrifice, so the thing now is to enjoy life together in the time we have left.

Oligarch Hoarders: Like any hoarder, oligarchs want more wealth as they hunger for what money can’t give them. There’s an emptiness they can never satisfy despite their wealth and purchased loyalty. No real friends to fill the vast emptiness of a vacuous heart.

It would be merciful to stop their suffering. No, not like that. Tax them, until they have only as much as what many crave: a house for their family, means of transportation, enough food and enough leisure to enjoy life. They would need a lot of therapy too. Is there a 12 step programme for greed?

I think for Trump, getting one over on others and humiliating others is the air that he breaths. The money is just a way to do it and to show it. It's a related mental illness. I would not be surprised if he lives to be over 100 because evil POS like that often do!

They probably are addicts. But isn't it tragic that every other addiction has a therapy and often is regulated by government, but money hording is not? Instead, governments not only feed the money addiction, but often literally feed on it, corrupted as they are.

When the Pale Guy is observed in the underworld, Mitch freezes up here. In a The Twilight Zone episode, the plot twist would be that we are the ones living in the underworld. Not ruling this out completely.

If you’re poor and wish you were rich as you struggle to survive you’re sane. However if you’re rich and have contempt for the poor you’re Republican.

I LOVE GdT for his movies, his art... but the quotes I see from him every day may have come to impress me even more. Great art flowing out from a great heart.
